On The Ground
Sometimes, the questions you ask are more important than the answers you give. We’ve heard this countless times throughout our search work that a candidate didn’t ask good questions. The ability to ask good questions demonstrates not just curiosity in the company / the job, but is a very important signal to the interviewer that the candidate acutely understands the nuances of the business, the ecosystem, and the market. It shows a level of expertise and depth that sometimes is hard to ascertain during a first conversation. It also - assuming the questions aren’t canned - highlights someone’s ability to quickly synthesize information and think on their feet.
In fact, our team typically starts long-form interviews with “What questions do you have about the role?” because it shows that a candidate took the time to prepare, think, and get curious.
