On The Ground

What we’re thinking about this week

For the past two weeks we've looked at who got hired. This week we looked at who companies are still trying to hire. Right now, our job board (The Health Talent Exchange) has 211 open roles at the Director, Head of and VP level across 74 companies. Two things stand out.

Customer success is the quiet commercial hire. Commercial roles make up 41% of open leadership positions, more than clinical and engineering combined. But they aren't all about closing new deals. Seventeen are post-sale roles in customer success, client success, partner success and account management. Hippocratic AI alone is hiring four VPs of Customer Success, and Progyny, Covera, Redox and Clarion are hiring for similar roles. Companies that sold AI tools and value-based contracts over the past two years now need leaders who can make those deals stick. And when you're paid on outcomes, renewals are where the money is.

AI hiring doesn't show up in job titles. Only 5 of the 211 roles mention AI or machine learning in the title, and just one of those was posted in the last five weeks. Engineering and data roles, however, grew from 12% to 17% of new postings. Companies aren't building separate AI teams. They're expecting their engineering and product leaders to own AI as part of the job. Product is moving the same way: still a small number of roles, but its share of new postings went from 2% to 8% in the past five weeks.

Our read: the market has moved from buying to delivering. The leaders in demand now are the ones who can turn signed contracts and AI promises into results customers renew.

P.S. Is AI expertise earning a pay premium even when it isn't in the title? That's one of the questions this year's compensation study will answer. Add your data to the confidential survey here.
