On The Ground
Entrepreneurial spirit is something that we test for regularly. That grit and perseverance is paramount when it comes to joining a growing organization. Sure, there are hints - perhaps someone who repeatedly joins early stage companies, and takes them from zero to one. You can always look at objective measures. But how do you test for ability to handle pace and the twists and turns of an organization?
One of our favorite interview questions is “Tell me about a recent experiment that you’ve run.” You can then follow up with a flurry of others that will make for a rich discussion - What was the hypothesis? What were the assumptions? What were the results? Were they what you expected? How did you adjust going forward?
The answer here shows how quickly someone makes decisions, accumulates and assesses information, how they process where they went wrong and correct for it going forward. So ask the question! After all, you shouldn’t be experimenting with who you hire into your organization.
