On The Ground

What we’re thinking about this week

Buckle up. Or stay buckled up. The hiring run continues and isn’t necessarily showing signs of slowing. Perhaps a few speed bumps here and there, but that’s largely attributable to one of the busiest conference seasons in recent memory, with what seemed like a conference every week since ViVe.

What’s remarkable is the sustained demand for growth leaders, which has been running hot since Q4 of 2024. Notably, the emphasis on player/coach execs at the VP/Head of level is spiking, highlighting the importance of a finely tuned sales engine for a scaling organization, particularly in land-grab moments like we are seeing in the AI space. Whether it’s transitioning from Founder-led sales because true product market fit has been reached, or tucking a Head of Sales under a CGO to gain more leverage as part of a broader GTM strategy, the role is proliferating and competitive.

If you find yourself contemplating this hire, it’s not contrarian to say that now is the time, in spite of the aforementioned froth. As the year creeps on, it gets harder and harder to dislodge high performing sales leaders, as you contend with end-of-year sprints and large comp payouts. Simultaneously, this role isn’t the VP of Sales of old. It’s moving faster, adapting to new technologies, and requiring a new style of customer development and team management suited to the changing landscape.

Expect a busy summer - not just on the sales leadership front, but across the board functionally. Smart companies take advantage of the summer slump to capture the mindshare of top talent before the post Labor Day craziness sets in.
