On The Ground

What we’re thinking about this week

“Eventually…” It’s a word that we’ve heard several times this month from companies that need additional leadership to take on a challenge, but don’t have the time to think through the appropriate profile, or maybe the need just isn’t immediate.

A good leader is always recruiting. So what do you do when you don’t need the person yesterday, but know you’ll need them at some point in the near term?

  1. Identify the milestone / goal that this person is responsible for.
  2. Work backwards from when this individual needs to be in the seat in order to hit that goal, then walk back three months from that date. That’s the ideal time to launch your search.
  3. Get calibrated. Start talking to people who are in the role today, not necessarily to hire them, but to understand the different archetypes, capabilities and associated compensation bands.
  4. Share the ideal profile with your team, investors, and advisors so that they can act as your eyes and ears, amplifying your reach and capitalizing on when someone in their close circles becomes available.
  5. Build your market map. Keep a running list of your ideal candidates - you may not be ready to bring them on or they may not be available, but at least you know who they are so that you can move quickly when the time is right.

Not every hire needs to be a sprint; you can pipeline the roles with target dates in mind for optimal impact. Because by the time “eventually” arrives, you want to be ready.
