On The Ground

What we’re thinking about this week

New year, new merits (and merit increases 😉). In 2025, 43% of executives we polled in our annual Compensation Study received a merit increase of 6.9%. This is slightly down from 7.2% from the year before. The biggest winners were CEOs with an increase 14%, though only 33% received one. Completely flipped were Analytics execs, 68% of whom received an increase but only of 3.9%.

On a trend basis, all functions stayed relatively flat (within 1%) between 2024 and 2025. The biggest uptick were CEOs, specifically driven by non-founder CEO compensation, from 11% merit increase to 14%. Other C-Suite executives also received outsized increases of 8.2% on average, while SVPs received 4.8%, VPs 5.6%, and Directors 4.4%.

Companies should pay attention to this. 30% of executives polled listed compensation as the #1 reason why they would leave for a new role this year. If companies want to keep their people, compensation is a big lever to pull - a small increase can make a big statement.
