On The Ground

What we’re thinking about this week

Two weeks ago, we highlighted the pros of a highly connected ecosystem like ours; things like shared lessons learned, sharpened diligence and rapid team building ability. The same network connectivity that makes this market efficient also makes it easy to over-rely on. To make sure it’s working for you, instead of against you, we have some thoughts on how leverage it properly.

Start with reachability. When a warm intro is always one hop away, it's tempting to stop building relationships outside the usual paths. Particularly if you’re anchoring on “company logos” for performance indicators. The same twenty names keep recirculating, and you miss the person who hasn't yet crossed anyone's radar. The fix is to treat the network as a starting point, not the whole map: keep your eyes open to “colder” opportunities to connect, even when a warm path is sitting right there.

That same density can distort diligence. When reputations travel fast, they can also travel further than the facts do - a strong narrative about someone (good or bad) can get repeated with more confidence than the evidence supports. Team migrations are the clearest version of this: watching who follows a leader out the door is a useful signal, but it's easy to read too much into it without checking the actual reasons each person moved. It’s worth pressure-testing the narrative directly with the people involved, rather than taking the pattern as the verdict.

References carry the same risk in reverse. When a candidate is vouched for by someone the panel already trusts, that trust can substitute for real scrutiny - the reference feels more rigorous because the source is familiar, even when the content isn't. Good practice: ask the same hard questions of a known reference that you'd ask of a stranger, and actively seek out at least one voice from outside the immediate circle.

Be sure to zoom out: what spreads fastest isn't always what's best, particularly when recency bias is involved.

All of this is doubly important for diversity.  A tight, recirculating network tends to surface the same kinds of candidates over and over - people who look like, worked with, or were vouched for by others already in the circle - which narrows who even gets considered. For growing companies, that's a real cost as diverse teams bring a wider range of perspectives, networks, and blind spots covered, which produces better decisions and more resilient organizations through scale.

Sometimes looking beyond the immediate or closest network can make all the difference.
