On The Ground

What we’re thinking about this week

We all make a false assumption that summers are going to be quiet, but they are anything but. Executive turnover at the top ran hot this summer: 31 new CEOs or Presidents were named across the healthcare and health-tech landscape between June 5 and August 14 - nearly a quarter of all senior appointments we tracked. The bulk of the movement was concentrated at growth-stage, venture-backed companies (8 of the 31, spanning Series B/C rounds) and at PE-backed or sponsor-owned platforms (6 of 30) - a mix that reads as companies past product-market fit bringing in scale-up or turnaround leadership. Two publicly-traded companies shifted leadership, late-stage/unicorn companies added four new chief executives, and four early-stage, venture-backed companies brought in refreshed leadership as they build out.

Across the board, 70% were external hires and 30% were internal promotions / appointments.

By industry, the CEO churn skewed toward AI-enabled imaging/diagnostics, clinical trials/life-sciences tech, and value-based care/population health each accounting for four. Telehealth/virtual care, surgical/medtech, and revenue-cycle/claims each saw two to three CEO changes, rounding out a summer where leadership turnover touched nearly every corner of the industry rather than clustering in one hot sector.
