On The Ground

What we’re thinking about this week

It can be hard to parse true sentiment against the backdrop of the Pacific Ocean sparkling on the horizon during the annual pilgrimage to Health Evolution Summit in Laguna Beach, mostly because it’s nearly impossible not to be happy in those surroundings. But the general positivity and optimism that seemed to persist through most discussions appeared rooted in more than just the five start accommodations.

Hiring at key positions either immediately or in the next 3-5 months was the topic of nearly every conversation, with the point of emphasis ranging from a multi-hire upgrade across the board at the VP level, to plugging key C-suite gaps ahead of a Q4 fundraising effort, and everything in between. While our conversations will certainly have a theme bias, the consistent drumbeat of value being placed on getting critical hires right this cycle was noteworthy.

On the funding side, AI unsurprisingly dominated the discourse, and more than one conversation quickly shifted from how Claude has been invited into internal workflows, regardless of whether the company itself is in fact an AI company. There’s some nervousness around the hype cycle, deal pricing and the delta between platform and point solutions that could easily be wiped out by one of the underlying models snapping their fingers.

Overall though, there’s cautious optimism for the rest of the year ahead, and if nothing else, no sign that our hiring market is cooling off any time soon.
